MSDS's contain information on the properties of chemicals and materials. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that MSDS's be available, on-site for all hazardous chemicals in the workplace: 29 CFR 1910.1200 (g)(1).
Chemical manufacturers must develop and importers must obtain a material safety data sheet for each hazardous chemical they produce or import. Employers must have a material safety data sheet in the workplace for each hazardous chemical which they use.
When you purchase a new chemical or material, request that the MSDS is sent with the shipment. Please forward a copy of the MSDS to RMS at mail stop 1042.
If you need a MSDS for a chemical, you should first check the UNLV Material Safety Data Sheet database. If an MSDS cannot be found, please contact the RMS office. On-campus users can access the database directly, but those choosing to use the system from an off-campus location must log-in using their Lotus iNotes username and password. Further instructions on using the database can be found on the RMS website.
Please keep in mind that many manufacturers change formulations, and if the MSDS's that you have are over 2 or 3 years old, you may want to ask the manufacturer or distributor if a newer MSDS is available.
Questions or concerns relating to MSDSs or chemical inventory can be directed to Robert Deaver at ext 5-4386 or email robert.deaver@unlv.edu
